Postgraduate Research Study
Undertaking a research programme provides you with the opportunity to determine your own specialist field of study. The aim is for students to acquire in-depth knowledge and experience in a particular subject through original investigation. Students undertaking research degrees are provided with specialist supervision from experts in their subject area.
By choosing the University of Lincoln, postgraduate students benefit from working with specialists in their respective fields who have national and international reputations and excellent commercial links.
Students undertaking research degrees normally register for an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) with registration transferred to a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) after a year if appropriate progress is being made.
The MRes is a flexible programme of formal research training for recent graduates, lecturers or practitioners whose work requires application of specialist research skills. The MRes may also act as the preliminary stage for the completion of an MPhil or PhD.
Undertaking a research degree presents students with considerable challenges both intellectually and organisationally. You are required to work independently and you will acquire valuable career skills.
The period of time involved in completing a PhD is usually three years full-time or four years part-time, MPhil degrees normally take one or two years to complete full-time and three years part-time. The MRes Masters by research takes one year full-time or two to three years part-time. Candidates for research degrees must normally hold a first or second class honours degree from a British university or an equivalent qualification or experience.
