UN Sustainable Development Group 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth

UN SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

Overview

As an anchor institution for the county of Lincolnshire, we are proud of our significant positive impact on the economy of Lincoln and Lincolnshire. We are also proud of the impact our graduates are having locally in providing a skilled workforce for local businesses.

To support the progression of Lincoln students into local business, many of our courses offer placements, which not only improve opportunities to students, but can also help to increase the productivity of the supporting businesses. One of our students took a year-long placement with HGL Dynamics Ltd. The company reported that students' knowledge and natural engineering intuition allowed them to identify significant opportunities for cost savings and business improvement.

Research Spotlights

Exploring Visitor Economies

With its seaside towns such as Mablethorpe and Skegness, alongside the varied attractions Lincoln, the region has its fair share of tourism economies. The Visitor Economy Research Group is providing insights into the visitor economy in diverse contexts, both locally and internationally, and from a range of perspectives and multi-disciplinary approaches.

Supporting Student Workers

We have over 1,200 student employees in our Campus Jobs programme. These roles enable students to earn money to support themselves while studying. However, less than 1% are auto-enrolled onto a pension scheme or choose to join one.

After working with student focus groups, and in a bid to improve students' financial wellbeing and financial decision making, the University of Lincoln Reward Team set up a Student Workplace ISA. Students contribute up to 4% of earnings and that is then doubled by the University. Now over 90% of student workers are taking advantage of the scheme, with many choosing a custom investment portfolio – an incredibly positive result both for their financial security and their life skills. This scheme has won awards and has led to a meeting with the Pensions and Savings Minister, and may lead to changes in legislation.

Building Bridges

Our investment in the local industrial environment is exemplified by the development of Bridge, a research and development hub in the centre of Lincoln. Bridge is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and is designed to promote innovation and collaboration by linking businesses and providing access to high-spec equipment.

Creating Better Leaders

Our Lincoln International Business School takes particular pride in its commitment to the Principles for Responsible Management, which underpin our teaching, scholarship, and research, and contributes to our innovative approaches to education that treat learners as partners in the learning journey.

The Responsible Management Research Group is also conducting research that is improving our understanding of responsible management as a concept and as practice. It aims to influence the contribution that leaders, managers, and organisations make to global challenges, such as those described in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Creating Opportunities Through Education

Our wide range of apprenticeships across the food industry, engineering, business, and healthcare have allowed people to take control of their careers by gaining new qualifications and opportunities. Hear from some of our apprentices at the National Centre for Food Manufacturing in Holbeach.

UNESCO Chair

The UNESCO Chair was created to help address the global challenges of sustainable development through research and responsible foresight practices. Its mission is to work with communities to construct better futures in North-South collaboration, reframing the future, developing new knowledge, and addressing sustainable development goals.

Connecting Greater Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire is an incredibly rural county which can have an impact on the ability to provide populations with a strong digital infrastructure. In response to this, a team of leading economic development specialists at the University of Lincoln has produced a comprehensive guide on how to set up and run high-tech digital hubs in remote and rural locations which might otherwise suffer from a lack of digital infrastructure.

Greater Lincolnshire Agri-Food Innovation Platform

Led by our National Centre for Food Manufacturing, the Greater Lincolnshire Agri-Food Innovation Platform project worked with local businesses to develop innovation to improve the productivity and effectiveness of their business.
