Delivering research with impact is a key objective and an intrinsic part of the University of Lincoln's College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. Working across disciplines, our research covers a broad range of topics and utilises a wide variety of methodologies and approaches that foster regional, national, and international collaborations and partnerships.
The medieval city of Lincoln, with its 11th Century Cathedral and castle, provides a unique environment for heritage and conservation studies, from projects on stained glass and the Gothic revival, to print-based research utilising sources held in the Cathedral’s Wren and Medieval Libraries. On campus, our theatre, galleries, design labs, and studio spaces provide vibrant hubs for our creative community of academics and students. Answering questions around social justice and the law are also central to our mission, as is delivering research that benefits business and influences government, policymakers, and key stakeholders across society.
Research Spotlight
A new research project is questioning popular myths about young dads, who instead of being uncaring and irresponsible are demonstrating a desire to be positively involved in their children’s lives, while also advocating for more father-inclusive practices at a national level.
Our research centres are bringing together a range of expertise and knowledge from across the University's College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and beyond, undertaking groundbreaking and timely studies that are having a positive impact across society.
Alongside our research institutes and centres, we have a number of research groups working within the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities covering everything from medieval history, critical heritage, and global and transregional studies, to contemporary music and theatre, responsible management, and the visitor economy. The group is comprised of academics and postgraduate students from across the University and maintains a comprehensive approach to the study of violence to ensure recognition of its interpersonal, symbolic, and structural nature.
We offer a range of purpose-built facilities and high-quality resources and equipment for our researchers. This includes dedicated performance spaces, photography studios, multimedia editing suites, design workshops, printmaking facilities, a Moot Court, and specialist archives based at the International Bomber Command Centre.
All our students also have access to the 260,000 journals, 750,000 print and electronic books, and the range of databases and specialist collections that are available at our Great Central Warehouse Library.
The Lincoln Policy Hub supports researchers from all disciplines in developing their research for the Government, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The Hub features blogs, policy briefs, and policy guidance, connecting politicians, decision makers, and practitioners with our research to help to deliver evidence-based policies that meet the challenges facing our society today.
Postgraduate research students form an integral part of our academic community, and we aim to provide a vibrant research culture and environment to help them achieve their goals. As well as offering first-class research facilities across the College, our students can take advantage of a range of dedicated research and study spaces, suitable for both individual study and group work with fellow researchers.
Students can also take part in a variety of postgraduate training programmes to help equip them with critical research skills, while our dedicated Postgraduate Research Activity Support Fund, which is awarded competitively, is available for undertaking value-enhanced activities, such as speaking at conferences, and visiting external libraries and archives.
Working alongside expert academics and researchers, our postgraduate students are contributing to our growing reputation for internationally excellent research. We help them by offering a range of studentships throughout the year, including funded and part-funded opportunities, where students can get involved in a number of exciting research projects and studies.
Meet PhD student Francesca Cannon, whose doctoral research is focusing on the roles, relationships, and impact of three queens who were the second wives of kings in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
Professor Anna Tarrant leads the Centre for Innovation in Fatherhood and Family Research and her work focuses on giving young fathers a voice and a platform to present their views to senior-level professionals and practitioners.
