This accredited level 7 course is delivered online across eight weeks. Designed with non-specialist nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals in mind, it gives students the opportunity progress their career by gaining the skills and knowledge needed to work in mental health services.

Students can learn from experienced industry professionals, and tackle areas such as the assessment, formulation, and management of mental health conditions; ethical and legal challenges; and common treatment modalities seen in service.
By the time they complete the course, students should be able to:
• Discuss and evaluate the historical and current background to mental health services.
• Explain the legal and ethical frameworks which underpin mental health services in the UK.
• Critically discuss the assessment, formulation, and management of common mental health conditions.
• Compare and discuss pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments used within mental health services.
• Discuss methods to integrate therapeutic modalities into practice.
• Critically discuss risk formulation and assessment in mental health care.
• Evaluate mental health care across the life-span, including in those with a Learning Disability or Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Assessment: Week Commencing Monday 19 May 2025
Following eight weeks of study, students are assessed through a 20-minute presentation in week nine.
To undertake this course, you must:
- be a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council or HCPC (hold a current registration)
- be Band 5 or above working in a patient-facing clinical role within a healthcare setting providing NHS-commissioned care
- be able to provide evidence of previous level 6 study (Bachelor's degree level) OR for those without a level 6 certificate in education must provide evidence of prior learning such as:
Higher National Diploma (HND) in a relevant healthcare or nursing-related field; Foundation degree in nursing or a related discipline; other relevant professional qualifications such as those obtained through specific nursing roles or advanced practice; or work experience.
This course can open up opportunities to support work in mental health services as a nurse, midwife, or allied healthcare practitioner; understand and apply the ethical and legal principles which underpin mental health practice within the UK, develop confidence in the underpinning theories within mental health, develop confidence in the mental health formulation, assessment, and practical application.
