Event Information

The Lincoln Institute of Advanced Studies is delighted to invite you to Professor Jeanette Rotchell's inaugural lecture: Have We All Become 'Plastic People'?

Microplastics are everywhere in the environment, the human food chain, and have been recently detected in several types of human tissues. During this lecture Jeanette will explain what the smaller sized plastics are comprised of, how we analyse them, where we find them, whether they have infiltrated our own bodies, and what the implications of that might mean in terms of health impacts. It will provide an overview of results in the analysis of microplastic contamination in human tissue samples with respect to their presence (if any), levels, and characteristics of any particles identified will be presented. One can expect to hear about blood, lung, urine, and poop. These will be discussed according to the three routes of exposure: inhalation, diet, and operation. The wider implications in terms of human health impacts will then be explored. Finally, the main plastic polymer types found, and their possible sources from everyday items, will be explored. This, along with behaviour change and product choice suggestions, will provide a spark of hope for anyone wishing to mitigate against the inevitable burden of plastics in their bodies.

This event is free to attend, but please book your place in advance.
