Leprosy in Lincoln: The Hospital of the Holy Innocents
29 May 2025
6.00pm
Lincoln Guildhall, Saltergate, Lincoln, LN2 1DH
Event Information
Join Dr Samantha Tipper for a public lecture that will take you on a journey back in time to around 1098 to hear about Lincoln's Hospital of the Holy Innocents, a leprosarium, built on the city's South Common.
The hospital was in use for around 500 years, but the history of the people who worked, lived and died at the hospital has mostly been forgotten, with few realising the importance of the site or the amount of individuals buried there.
Dr Tipper's talk will discuss the spread of leprosy during the medieval period, leprosariums in Lincoln, the history of the Hospital of the Holy Innocents, and new research on the site.
