English Language and Study Skills Workshops

Workshops are single session events that usually happen at the start and end of semesters. Each workshop focuses on a different topic; some focus on writing structure and some focus on communication. 

Report Writing: Structure, Introductions, Conclusions and Methodologies

In many subjects, you will be asked to write reports rather than essays. This may be a daunting task if you aren’t familiar with how to write a report. Join this workshop to find out what the purpose of a report is; the structure and contents; and useful language used in report writing.

Computer Skills for Academic Study: Using Microsoft PowerPoint

Do you have a PowerPoint assignment to complete? Are you confident at designing clear, focused slides, adding text boxes and formatting your text? Can you change your slide design and order, and do you know how to animate your content? This practical workshop will allow you to develop these skills, as well as showing you how to add images and use mouse menus.

Understanding Assessment Briefs & Planning Essays Effectively

Do you struggle to start writing academic assignments? Being able to read and understand the assessment brief will help you to get started and increase your knowledge of what a good submission looks like. Understanding the assessment brief will also help you to plan your work and break the task into manageable chunks.

Academic Vocabulary: Tools

Academic vocabulary is central to your learning. Today’s technology can help you to check and develop your academic writing. In this workshop, learn how to utilise free and easy-to-use tools such as the Academic Word List (AWL), Academic Word highlighters, word collocation lists and Academic Formula Lists (AFL) to help you to proofread and edit your academic writing and academic presentations.

Using Evidence, Paraphrasing and Synthesis

Academic texts build on existing knowledge and therefore include other people’s views, methodologies and findings to support and contextualise your work. It is necessary to accurately represent the author’s ideas with appropriate paraphrasing and form links between different texts with synthesis. This session will help you develop essential skills to use evidence accurately and appropriately in your writing.

Reflective Writing

Do you have a reflective writing assignment but don’t know where to start? Join this interactive workshop and experience the reflective process. Develop your reflective skills as we work step by step through the stages so you can genuinely learn from your experiences and demonstrate that learning within your reflective writing assignment.

Exam Preparation

With exams fast approaching, do you want to know more about how to make the most of your revision timeJoin this workshop which aims to strengthen your exam preparation skills, as well as looking at how to analyse assessment briefs and rubrics to achieve the highest grades. It will help you to develop a process that will deepen your understanding of the exam and learn how to prioritise your revision. By developing good exam preparation skills, you will have the best opportunity to succeed on the day.

Editing and Proofreading your work

Editing and proofreading your work is the final step in the writing process. Although this is an important step, it can often be difficult to know how to do this effectively. This workshop will give you the skills you need to edit and proofread your work confidently, allowing you to understand and practise proofreading and editing techniques.
