Art and design at Lincoln is home to a community of creatives and innovators. Our courses cover a diverse range of subjects and are led by expert academics who are experienced practitioners and industry professionals. Each of our courses aims to prepare students for rewarding careers in areas such as marketing, advertising, publishing, graphic design, curating, and freelancing.

Opportunities to exhibit work at shows
We are dedicated to making sure our students are as employable as possible when they graduate. To support this, we provide plenty of opportunities to exhibit your work, network with industry professionals, and undertake placements. We also host a range of artists and professionals to deliver guest lectures and tutorials as part of our visiting artists programme. Recent speakers include Assemble (2015 Turner Prize winners), Ming Wong, Mark Titchner, Cath Keay, Jordan Baseman, and Joshua Sofaer.
The course offered many different modules in the areas of art and design which was extremely valuable, as at the time I was unsure of which field I wanted to specialise in. Through these modules, I was able to better understand the subject area and also discover which field I actually enjoyed working in, which has helped to shape my career path.

Students on many of our courses are able to display their work at the University’s on-campus public gallery, Project Space Plus. This is a great opportunity for students to build recognition, see what others are producing, and receive feedback.
Our industry-standard facilities enable our students to build and develop skills which they can put to use in the workplace.
Design students can access Adobe Creative Cloud suite software, which is available in all iMac computer suites across the University.
The University of Lincoln’s Art Shop stocks a wide range of art and design materials from specialist suppliers. Items such as sketchbooks, specialist papers, foam boards and tools are all available to purchase at reduced prices.
The Book Arts space offers students the opportunity to create publications with a variety of bindings from pamphlet stitching, to concertina books, lay flat bindings, Japanese stab binding, fan-binding and section sewn books. Students can work with workshop and technical staff to push the boundaries of materials and function to produce innovative and beautiful works, from unique copies to multiple editions.
Our fabric print specialist room features two large format printers with two sizes of accompanying heat press, for printing full colour digital images onto a range of natural and synthetic fabrics. As well as domestic sewing machines, there is also a semi-industrial embroidery machine which allows design students to convert drawings and lettering into stitches.
The MakerLab is a specialist facility for working with ceramics, glass and precious metals. The MakerLab comprises two small fusing kilns, a large flat-bed kiln, finishing machines, grinders, polishers, belt linishers and glass drilling equipment. There is also a large top loader for glass casting with a comprehensive programmer for long and complex annealing schedules. There is equipment for fine metalwork, laser cutting, heat press and sublimation printing, and book binding.
Students can use an array of machinery and hand tools for the cutting, shaping and general fabrication of woods and metals. Laser cutting machines enable work with materials from fine papers and card through to soft and hard woods, veneers, acrylic plastic, leather, fabrics, MDF, plywood and stencil plastics. The rapid prototyping area is equipped with manufacturing 3D printers which are used to create 3D physical models.
The photography studios are fully fitted with electronic LED flash lighting, wet film processing, darkrooms and a digital video edit suite. Students have access to a range of camera formats and computer suites. The photography studios are utilised for a wide range of projects from individual and group portraiture, to product shoots and occasionally live action/slow motion capture.
The printmaking studios provide facilities for traditional and contemporary printmaking processes. The studios cater for a comprehensive range of techniques including screen printing, relief printing, and monotype and letterpress.
Our Sculpture and 3D workshop allows mold making and casting in a variety of materials from plaster and wax to specialist silicone rubbers and epoxy resins. Our experienced technicians can guide students through many processes such as how to carry out life casting, making work directly from the body, or woodwork and clay for making masters, prototypes or even finished pieces.
A range of specialist and large format printers are housed in the Peter de Wint Building. Students can print on a range of specialist papers up to A0+ size, as well as using the large format, hi-resolution, scanning, vinyl cutting and Risograph printing facilities.
Our technical facilities are managed by a team of more than 30 highly experienced technical experts. Many of the team are practising artists, designers and makers, with years of relevant knowledge and a passion for supporting students’ learning.
Multi-materials workshops for wood, metal, plaster, plastics, resin, equipment for acrylic resist etching, digital imagery and screen printing, as well as photography, video and animation facilities.
