History, Classical Studies, and Conservation

Preserving the Past

With its magnificent cathedral, a medieval castle, an original of the 1215 Magna Carta, and the International Bomber Command Centre, Lincoln is an inspiring place in which to study history and heritage. At the University of Lincoln, we offer a range of courses spanning history, classical studies, and conservation. These programmes ask questions of the past, revealing knowledge that is relevant to how we think about ourselves and our place within society today.

Our Facilities

You can make use of the excellent facilities and resources available on campus, including the University’s Great Central Warehouse Library. There are also impressive resources around the city, including the Tennyson Research Centre based at the Lincolnshire Archives, the Lincoln Museum, and the International Bomber Command Centre archives. There is also the outstanding collection of medieval manuscripts and rare books housed at Lincoln Cathedral’s Wren Library – a centre for philosophical study since the time of the eminent 13th Century theologian, Bishop Robert Grosseteste.

Conservation Labs

Our Conservation students can gain hands-on experience in our high-specification laboratories working on a range of historic materials provided by museums, historic houses, and private collections.

Lincoln Conservation

The University is home to Lincoln Conservation, a company that combines research, teaching, and commercial expertise. It specialises in architectural paint research and the digital and physical conservation of historic objects, decorative schemes, and buildings. The expertise of our consultants has helped to inform the restoration of the Midland Grand Hotel (now known as the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel), HMS Victory, and Southwell Minster.

Study Overseas

Our full-time undergraduate students may have the opportunity to study abroad at a partner institution, with the potential for further work or volunteering while away. This gives our students the chance to think about their course in an international context, as well as experience new ideas and cultures.
