The rule of law is the cornerstone of any just and fair society, and to be administered correctly it requires skilled and knowledgeable legal professionals. Our law courses at Lincoln provide our students with the skills that they need to practice in a legal career. The closely related field of criminology uses theory to explore some of the most contentious issues in contemporary society, working to understand the causes of crime and the way in which criminal justice agencies respond to offenders.

At Lincoln, we place a strong emphasis on helping you gain confidence in professional practice. We encourage our Law students to develop legal skills by entering competitions in mooting and negotiation. Our Moot Court allows you to experience key themes of modern legal practice across a variety of courtroom roles. You can also sharpen your skills by getting involved in the Lincoln Law Clinic as part of your studies. The clinic provides pro-bono legal advice to staff and students at the University and enables you to apply your knowledge to real cases.
You can also benefit from a mentoring scheme, offering second-year undergraduate law students the chance to be mentored by local professionals, as well as a wide range of careers events which introduce students to opportunities both within and outside the legal sector.
Our mock-court environment gives our law students the opportunity to explore key principles of modern legal practice in a variety of courtroom roles to strengthen their studies and practice their mooting skills. It features a judge's bench, witness stand, clerk's desk, and prosecution and defence solicitor benches to simulate the environment of a working court room.
Our full-time undergraduate students may have the opportunity to study abroad at a partner institution, with the potential for further work or volunteering while away. This gives our students the chance to think about their course in an international context, as well as experience new ideas and cultures.
Law and Criminology
Visit our research repository to explore law and criminology theses, journal articles, book chapters, and papers from our academics, many of whom are working across our research institutes, centres, and groups.
We are committed to giving students the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the knowledge in their chosen field through their own research. Throughout the course students may have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research projects or even conduct their own research. Recent publications by Lincoln students include research by Ben Pelling on 'mid level' recreational drugs supply and by Mikey Hirst on the advertising for semaglutide and testosterone clinics on social media.
